STAFF TRAINING

are you in the right place?

If you are an organisation that works with families then YES, you are exactly where you are supposed to be!

I can support your organisation with staff training that is tailored to your needs.  Does your organisation have a pain point in…

  • adult-child interactions?  I can support staff to use verbal and non verbal cues, explore behaviour and the environment to better effect.
  • staff knowledge and understanding of child development? specifically support your understanding of brain development in the early years
  • staff applying knowledge to practice? I hear ya, no one wants another theory-heavy death by PowerPoint presentation!
  • Staff stuck in a rut with the resources? I can bet you probably don’t NEED new resources (although, yes I can help you with that too) – I can help you utilise what you have to maximise IMPACT

GET IN TOUCH

For want of a better example, let's think of my 3 programmes as 3 levels of swimming experiences...

Now, I am not a swimmer, but bear with me while I stretch this analogy thin, ok?

PADDLING

This is an introductory sensory workshop – where we ‘get our feet wet’ much like padding, with the topic and main concepts – great fun!

SWIMMING

We are a bit more confident now and the half day training will take us through the concepts in more depth with more practical strategies we can use – you are grand to go off and enjoy all things sensory now with your ‘basic swimming strokes’.

DEEP DIVE

We are much more confident to really hone in on specific areas of our practice, reflect on what is going well and what strategies we can use to improve – ‘deep dive into deeper water’ in this full day training!

how can i help?

I have been working in Early Years for over 18 years – in the voluntary, private and public sectors.

For half of my career I worked in preschools in Northern Ireland as leader and also as chairperson – I am acutely aware of the challenges faced within the sector from funding, preschool curriculum, eti and HSCT registration and inspections.

In recent years I support other organisations as a member on the Boards of Directors of an out of school childcare facility (Children’s Lane Childcare Ltd.) and a perinatal mental health charity (The Parent Rooms) for whom I also volunteer as a Peer Support Leader.  I am also a lecturer at (SERC) as I find it incredibly important to support the next generation of early years professionals in their learning journey.

The common thread throughout has been that for a child to thrive, the people and environment around it must be optimised.  That means the parents and staff need as much knowledge, support and understanding as possible, so they can make the best choices and so giving the child the best chances!

My programmes offer a safe space for the adults to explore and come to grips with the theory, while also offering simple strategies to put it into practice, supporting development in all areas.

Umm, I have questions...

In my training workshops I share easy actions you can take to shake up your play environment and resources to maximise sensory experiences and child development.

I will give you tools to audit the resources, materials and opportunities in your setting, identifying success and ways to fill gaps in provision.

I am aware that there is incredible diversity within early years across the voluntary, statutory and private sectors, therefore staff training is tailored to the needs of the group.

My evidence based programmes, made relevant by my own expertise and practice mean that training sessions are innovative and engaging for staff teams ranging from inexperienced students, to career veterans!

How in-depth we go, will vary depending on the level of programme you book and the needs of your organisation.

Essentially we will explore…

  • what the sensory systems are
  • how they impact brain development
  • how this impacts overall development
  • how this affects emotional development and regulation, and ultimately resilience (our ability to cope)
  • what it looks like when things are dysregulated and ‘tricky’
  • factor that affect our sensory systems – including bodily functions and development, the environment and human interactions

Then – we look at strategies (easy things we can do) to make sure the sensory system is getting stimulated and the happy knock on affect that has on everything else!

We do this through a combination of presentation, shared practice, reflection and workbooks.

Simple!

There are 3 levels of training to meet different needs and budget.

  • £250 for Introductory 90min ‘Let’s paddle’ sensory session – a good overview of theory and basic support strategies
  • £500 Half day – now we are ‘Swimming’ sensory session – includes introductory session PLUS exploring environments, resources and interactions
  • £800 – full day (or 2 half sessions) – ‘Seep Dive’ – includes all of the above PLUS setting specific audit, and strategies, and some bonus goodies!

Please see further down page for full details!

Please note…

These training workshops are for staff to explore sensory strategies to support the children in their care.

To support the staff in their own wellbeing, to better understand their own sensory systems, and explore ways to support their own regulation and build resilience – consider booking an ADULT SENSORY WORKSHOP

I can support your preschool with very specific training in line with the preschool curricular guidance, and eti inspection requirements; also HSCT registration and inspection under Minimum Standards guidance.

This can be particularly useful for settings with children who have or may have additional needs, which are often still  undiagnosed or do not have support from statutory services at this stage.

Please note that listed price includes up to 10 staff – it may be suitable to join with another setting to avail of the training.

Meeting the needs of several groups (baby room, toddlers, preschoolers, afterschool) can be particularly challenging especially during Covid-19 with increased restrictions on bubbles for staff and children and on movement and sharing of resources.

I can support your organisation with specific training in 1 room/ area or more generalised across whole setting, to ensure all staff skills and knowledge are on par.

Also ensuring specific reference is made to relevant Minimum Standards guidance.

Often out of school care/ sessional staff have specific challenges, usually with pack away provision and supporting a wide age ranges together.

We can look at strategies to maximise the environment and resources to meet the needs of all the children in your care – especially those older ones!

Also ensuring specific reference is made to relevant Minimum Standards guidance.

I work with a range of national and regional organisations and charities to support the work they do with families in local communities, including

  • Home-Start
  • Surestart
  • Mental Health charities
  • Charities for children with additional needs

Specific programmes may include
  • Perinatal Programme (Pregnancy to 1 year)
  • Dad’s Programme

I work with teaching and non teaching staff teams across the Foundation Stage, Key Stages 1 and 2.  We can look at how the curriculum can be implemented with strategies to support sensory regulation and ultimately learning.

CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

Sinead McGrath Headshot

I really enjoyed this training it was informative and practical.  The conversations after the training has meant there has been space for reflection of training and practice. A greater understanding and a greater awareness and a willingness to join it all together. .

WHAT ABOUT COVID-19?

Currently all training and workshops are taking place via Zoom.

After a bit of resistance (my own) I a finding there are lots of benefits that I hadn’t anticipated

  • lower costs and time saving – no travel for anyone
  • learning style – we all receive information differently and its lovely to see how differently people engage online. Questions via the chat section, video on/ off – engage as much (or little) as you want!  The online format is a combination of presentation, shared experiences and interactive reflections with the workbooks and even making resources together online!
  • home life – the reality is we all have a lot going on – and jumping on an evening zoom or during little ones nap time make it more accessible for a lot of people
